On Saturday, March 2, 2024, we decided to take an afternoon trip to Skyline Drive during Aunt Pat’s and her husband, Charles’ visit, since Landy and I haven’t been there before. Also, Aunt Pat mentioned that one of her interests is being out in nature, which is why she and her husband took a vacation to Glacier National Park via Amtrak.

I figured that we were going to just ride along there, but we got to stop and take pictures. (We went to Front Royal North, in case you’re wondering.)

Pleasure and Joy

“Now shall I walk or shall I ride? Ride, Pleasure said. Walk, Joy replied.” W.H. Davies

Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive are the perfect combination of pleasure and joy. Chances are you took a pleasure ride today and found yourself here. You can easily add a bit of joy to your day right here at The Point Overlook.

Notice the break in the stone wall and the steps leading to a path. The path takes you just beyond the trees you see ahead to a large boulder just perfect for sitting and contemplating the horizon. It’s a beautiful view!

Along with the pleasure of a leisurely ride on Skyline drive, Shenandoah’s many gifts include numerous “leg stretcher” trails–short walks to beautiful vistas or cool streams. Ask for recommendations at a visitor center and add a little joy to your pleasure.

Afterwards, we went to Outback for dinner, which was really crowded since it was a Saturday. Then on the way home, we stopped at CVS before returning home. Overall, it was a very nice day trip. Maybe next time, we might go one of the trails; I just got to make sure we all have hiking boots on.
