Happy Ramadan to those who celebrate it!

Yesterday, Marie B posted the following update to the campaign, Evacuate Fares and his family from Gaza:

I just watched a video by Palestinian American Jenan Matari, and she made a solid point: Americans love to be pacified.

We get stuck doomscrolling, reacting to whatever fascists post online with rage click bait, and venting our outrage while the people in power keep doing exactly what they want. It’s a distraction. It keeps us from organizing, calling legislators, protesting, boycotting … all the things that actually matter.

I don’t want to feed into that. I don’t want you to either.

I know my privilege—I’m sitting here in the U.S., where my tax dollars are funding genocide, while my friend Fares Abulebda is living through it. I don’t want to make this about me, but I also won’t pretend I don’t see the stark power imbalance. What I can do from here is help in real, material ways.

Fares was able to raise enough to evacuate his mom and younger brother, who has kidney disease. That’s huge. But the work isn’t done. We’re 70% of the way to the next stretch goal—just 30% left. If everyone reading this gave $20, we’d close that gap.

I know we’re all exhausted. I feel it too. But exhaustion is a privilege when people like Fares don’t get to take a break.

Let’s push through and reach the goal.

Thank you.
